Burton Latimer young leader chosen for lifetime adventure

June 12, 2010

Four Scouting leaders from the north of the county have been selected from 100,000 volunteers to represent the UK at the 22nd World Scout Jamboree in Sweden.

Mike Jennings, Sandra Lewis, Andrew Hartley and Jim Slater are four of just 500 successful candidates chosen for the trip of a lifetime after completing a variety of team activities to demonstrate why each of them should gain a place at the 2011 World Scout Jamboree.

As well as being a great opportunity for young people, the event is a chance for adults to be part of the volunteers who make the jamboree happen.

Their theme is Contribute, Develop, Inspire which is what they will be expected to do for the 30,000 Scouts attending the event.

Jim Slater, who is the adult member of Rushden District Scout Fellowship, said: “At the last World Jamboree in 2007, I made some brilliant friends from Scout groups all over the world.

“Sweden will be a great chance for us all to meet up again and swap stories.”

While living in Scandinavian grassland for two weeks, the Scout leaders will have the opportunity to meet people from nearly every country in the world and share their knowledge and experiences while working towards greater understanding of other countries and cultures.

Mike Jennings, district commissioner for Wellingborough District, said: “Scouting offers young people a wealth of great opportunities to discover who they are. I’m looking forward to learning something new in Sweden and passing that on to my district.”

Sandra Lewis, who is leader of the 1st Isham and Orlingbury Scouts, said: “I’ve been to international jamborees before and it’s so inspiring to see people from so many different countries working together.”

Andrew Hartley, a sixth form student from Burton Latimer who is a young leader with the Burton Latimer Scout Group, said: “I can’t wait to meet lots of new people and learn more about scouting in their countries.”

Andrew was intervied by a panel of County Scouters, he was chosen to represent Northamptonshire Scouts with 35 others. 9 of those chosen come from Glendon District.

The cost per person is £2500, fundraising events around the District will be held during the year.Andrew is looking for ideas to hold events in Burton Latimer at his Scout Group?

The blue edged Jamboree badge can be purchased and worn on uniforms to support the County representatives.  The team will wear a red edged Jamboree badge.

If Scout Groups would like a power point presentation this can be arranged
